Start your journey to a degree

Stay local and get experience

Look for the Associate of Arts in Teaching or an Associate of Arts in Education. These programs are designed to help you transfer smoothly to a four-year university and continue on the path to your teaching license.

As you’re working on your associate degree, explore four-year universities in New Mexico that offer teacher licensure programs. You’ll transfer as a junior and jump right into upper-level courses.
ProTip: Some New Mexico community colleges now offer four-year education degrees, so you may be able to earn your bachelor’s degree right where you are—without transferring to a university. Ask your advisor what’s available.

Once you transfer, choose a major in education or the subject you want to teach—like math, science or English. Make sure your program includes a teaching license. Some programs bundle your degree and license into one streamlined path.

Finish your bachelor’s degree and your licensing requirements, and you’ll be ready to step into the classroom and start changing lives.
