University of the Southwest

This fully online program consists of 8-week courses.

You will fulfill your internship requirements while teaching full-time as the teacher of record in your own classroom.

Program requirements include completing 18 credit hours and a two-year teaching placement in a public or private school in New Mexico.

You will gain hands-on experience by managing your own classroom while completing your coursework. Unlike traditional teacher preparation programs with extended student teaching under a mentor, you will serve a licensed instructor from the start. You will receive onsite support, mentorship and supervisory guidance throughout your program.

This immersive experience involves full-time teaching responsibilities, including:

• Lesson planning
• Instruction
• Student assessment
• Classroom management

USW’s programs focus on adapting instruction to meet the needs of all students, including students with disabilities, giftedness and English Language learners.

The alternative licensure program at the University of the Southwest offers mentorship and support, including:

• One-on-one coaching from experienced mentors and university supervisors.
• Help with lesson planning and classroom management.
